Kang (20s, female) visited ‘M’ coffee shop in LA Korean Town last March. Kang entered the restroom, and looked at the flower in the space under the cabinet opposite the toilet. Kang said, “There was a picture taken to confirm the face and body of the person who was sitting in the toilet. According to Kang, the camera was set to record one minute automatically when a person enters the toilet.

강모(20대·여)씨는 지난 3월 LA한인타운에 있는 ‘M’ 커피숍을 찾았다. 남녀공용인 화장실에 들어간 강씨는 변기 맞은편 장식장 밑 칸에 놓인 꽃이 평소와 달라 자세히 들여다봤다. 강씨는 조화인지 생화인지 확인하기 위해 꽃을 들어올렸다가 깜짝 놀랐다. 꽃을 심어놓은 부분에 작은 카메라가 달려있었던 것.
강씨는 “아주 작은 소형 카메라 뒷부분엔 작은 USB가 달려있었고 카메라의 위치는 정확히 변기 쪽을 향하고 있었다”며 “너무 당황스러웠고 직원에게 곧장 사실을 알렸다”고 당시 상황을 전했다. 직원의 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰이 USB를 확인해본 결과 총 21개의 영상이 녹화돼있었다.
강씨는 “정확히 변기에 앉은 사람의 얼굴과 신체를 확인할 수 있도록 영상이 찍혀 있었다. 고의적으로 여성을 노린 범죄로 보였다”라고 말했다. 이어 그는 “나를 포함해 영상 속에는 이날 함께 카페에 간 친구의 모습도 담겨있었다”며 “혹여나 영상들이 유포될 수도 있었다고 생각하니 소름이 끼쳤다”며 분노했다.
강씨에 따르면 카메라는 사람이 화장실 칸에 들어오면 자동적으로 1분씩 녹화되도록 세팅돼 있었다.
이에 대해 ‘M’커피숍 업주는 “이런 불미스러운 일이 일어나 손님들께 그저 죄송할 따름이다”며 “당시 경찰에 적극적으로 협조했으며 이후 화장실 및 커피숍 내 보안 점검을 더욱 강화했다”고 말했다.
LA한인타운 전담지서인 LA경찰국(LAPD) 올림픽경찰서의 성범죄 수사과의 리 경관은 “한인타운에서 이와 비슷한 범죄 피해가 매달 2~3건씩 접수되고 있다”고 밝혔다. 그는 “아직까지는 특정한 패턴이 없어 수사에 난항을 겪고 있다”며 “타운 내 호텔, 식당, 일반 주택 등 다양한 곳에서 몰카 범죄가 발생하고 있다”고 설명했다.
