‘Jelly’, aka K Pop Mom group, debuted in earnest on the 12th anniversary with a new song ‘Shake it like a Mutha’.
The average age of the three members is 37 years old. Young mothers in their 30s who have two-year-old babies and 11-year-old middle-school children have challenged the K-pop group starting from a dance class in a dance studio in LA Korean Town a year ago.
Leader Jenny Kim (39) said, “I always liked singing and dancing. I thought it was time to challenge the singer’s dreams before it was too late.
Emily (36) and her Japanese husband Yumihan (37), who have always been close friends, coincided with Kim. Jelly, a group named after the initials of their names, scrambled in full swing.
Jelly’s new song ‘Sheikh Like Mother’ features a funky sound and is a mother who sacrifices sacrifice for her family, but at one point she confessed to the mothers’ dream of life as a ‘woman’.
Especially, the music videos of the superhero mothers fighting with the iPad and the junk food monsters trying to break the children expressed the fun of childbirth like fighting.
“We actually melted our experience into the song,” Kim said. “I hope my mothers who get back to their husbands and childcare will be healed and encouraged for a while.”
The challenge as a mother was not easy. There were also mothers who worked in child care up to their own job, and ten bodies were lacking.
Kim said, “It was not easy for everyone to work or get together to practice dancing,” he recalled at the time.
K-pop professionals have also been empowered to challenge their mothers. Producer team ‘The91West’, who had a relationship with Han, was in charge of producing the song, and Korean hip-hop singer MYK took the role of rapper of the song. Hollywood star Anders Pack, who worked with the Korean-American director Jian was responsible for this new music video jelly.
She said, “It’s hard to compare with the pretty K pop girl group, but we are a lady group.” She said, “Jelly said she would like to create a new category called ‘K pop mom group.'”
Jelly plans to release “Age is not nothin but number” soon, which includes Korean lyrics with the next song.
일명 K팝 엄마그룹으로 통하는 ‘젤리(Jelly)’가 지난 12일 마더스데이에 맞춰 신곡 ‘셰이크 라이크 마더(Shake it like a Mutha·엄마 처럼 흔들어)’를 발표하며 본격 데뷔했다.
3명의 멤버 평균 나이는 37세. 두살 아기부터 11세 중학생 자녀를 둔 30대 젊은 엄마들은 1년 전 LA한인타운에 있는 한 댄스 스튜디오에서 춤 강습을 받은 것이 시작으로 K팝그룹에 도전장을 내밀었다.
리더 제니 김(39)씨는 “평소 노래와 춤을 좋아했는데, 더 늦기 전에 가수의 꿈에 도전해 봐야겠다라는 생각이 들어 엄마들끼리 힘을 뭉쳤다”고 말했다.
평소 친하게 지내던 에밀리 양(36)씨와 한인 남편을 둔 일본계 미국인 유미 한(37)씨가 김씨와 의기투합했다. 각자 이름의 이니셜을 딴 그룹명 ‘젤리(Jelly)’로 본격 출격했다.
펑키한 사운드가 특징인 젤리의 신곡 ‘셰이크 라이크 마더’는 가족을 위해 희생을 마다않는 엄마이지만 한번쯤은 그저 한 ‘여자’로서의 삶을 꿈꾸는 엄마들의 고백이 담겼다.
특히 수퍼히어로가 된 엄마들이 아이들을 헤치려는 아이패드와 정크푸드 몬스터와 싸우는 내용의 뮤직비디오는 전투와도 같은 육아를 재밌게 표현했다.
김씨는 “실제 우리의 경험을 곡에 녹였다”며 “남편 뒷바라지와 육아에 치여 정작 자신들을 챙기는 건 뒷전인 엄마들이 노래를 통해 잠시나마 힐링이 되고 용기를 얻었으면 한다”고 설명했다.
엄마로서의 도전은 쉽지 만은 않았다. 육아에 각자 일까지 하는 엄마들도 있어 몸이 10개라도 부족했다.
김씨는 “다들 일하랴 살림하랴 춤 연습 한번 모이기도 쉽지 않았다”며 “뒤에서 믿고 지원해주는 든든한 가족들이 없었으면 포기했을 것 같다”고 당시를 회상했다.
엄마들의 도전에 K팝 전문가들도 힘을 보탰다. 한씨와 친분이 있던 프로듀서팀 ‘The91West’가 곡의 프로듀싱을 맡았고 한인 힙합가수 MYK는 곡의 랩 피처링을 맡았다. 할리우드 스타 앤더스 팩 등과 작업한 바있는 한인 제이 안 감독은 젤리의 이번 신곡 뮤직비디오를 담당했다.
양씨는 “예쁜 K팝 걸그룹하고는 비교하긴 어렵지만 우리는 아줌마 그룹”이라고 웃으면서”젤리가 ‘K팝 엄마그룹’이라는 새로운 카테고리를 만들었으면 좋겠다고 말했다”고 포부를 전했다.
젤리는 다음 곡으로 한국어 가사가 포함된 ‘나이는 숫자에 불과해(Age ain’t nothin but number)’를 조만간 발표할 계획이다.
